recently I was loading sharepoint services 3.0 on w2k3 and the os partition ran out of space. So, since I was using vmware, I added a second virtual drive.
Of course, when you choose a custom install and point to the 2nd drive, MS likes to put things in the c:\program files dir.
change the default install dir, follow this tech article.
